With two coasts to choose from and different conditions through the year on both coasts surfing in Costa Rica can be a year round adventure. The folks at Surf Costa Rica believe the best plan is to find a great location to start from and then visit the different breaks. When you find one to your liking pull over your car and get out your board. This gives you more time for riding the waves and a lot less time driving.  What you want to plan on is where to begin looking, and when.

The Northern Pacific coast is best between the months of December and April. The offshore winds along with swell directions can give great breaks at these three locations:

  1. Witches Rock
  2. Playa Grande
  3. Playa Negra

The southern and central Pacific coast will see better conditions in the months from May to November. Some favorite destinations include:

  1. Playa Hermosa Terrazos
  2. Playa Hermosa El Almendro
  3. Jaco Beach
  4. Boca Barranca

In the south you can catch the waves at these popular beaches:

  1. Playa Hermosa (good for beginners)
  2. Playa Domenical (very consistent surf)
  3. Playa Metapalo (not as crowded)

On the other side of the country you can enjoy surfing Caribbean style at:

  1. Playa Vargas (inside the Cahuita National Park)
  2. Puerto Viejo-El Barco (another spot good for beginners )
  3. Playa Cocles (recommended for veterans)

These and many other inviting beaches await both the surfer and spectator. The best way to get surfing is to research which surf suits you best and then drop by iTrip to find a Costa Rica vacation rental near that spot. You’ll have the perfect starting place to begin your quest for that perfect wave.
